Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir/ Madam,

I am writing this letter to request you to return my important papers that I lost at your hotel conference room.

I would like to tell you that I attended one conference at your hotel on July 24,2026. The conference lasts for five days. On the last day, I was in hurry that's why I forgot my file there on desk. I think so it was the 2nd last row in Room # 2, ground floor. This is the last time I remember it was with me.

The file is of green color with a big dragon sticker on it. Additionally, my name is already written on that file. I want to explain you the importance of that file. It includes all my important documents including my qualifications and transcript. Furthermore, all documents are original.

I request you and your management to please find my file at your earliest convenience and keep it with you. Once you will search it, please update me as soon as possible.

It would be great if you can reach to me on my phone number.

I look forward to hearing from you

Yours Sincerely,

XYZ

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly identified the location of the lost papers, explained their importance by mentioning they contain original qualifications and transcripts, and provided a clear request for the manager to assist in locating them. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter. To improve, you could provide more specific details about the conference or the time of day to help the staff locate the items more efficiently, which would further develop your ideas and move you toward a higher band.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body, and conclusion. You use paragraphing to separate different ideas, which makes the letter easy to follow. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat basic and occasionally repetitive (e.g., 'I think so', 'Furthermore'). The transition between sentences could be smoother; for instance, using more varied linking words like 'consequently' or 'in addition to this' would improve the flow. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear, but the management of cohesion could be more sophisticated.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You have an adequate range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. You use some specific descriptive language, such as 'green color' and 'dragon sticker', which is helpful. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'I was in hurry' (should be 'in a hurry') and 'reach to me' (should be 'reach me' or 'contact me'). To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more precise, formal vocabulary related to business correspondence, such as 'misplaced' instead of 'lost' or 'retrieve' instead of 'find'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'The conference lasts for five days' (should be 'lasted'), 'I think so it was' (should be 'I believe it was'), and 'Once you will search it' (should be 'Once you have searched for it'). Punctuation is generally functional, though there are minor issues with spacing after commas. To improve, focus on consistent verb tense usage and refining your control over complex sentence structures to reduce these frequent minor errors.
