Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir,

I am writing this letter to seek help from you regarding finding some hard copies, unfortunately which I forgot to take it when I left from the hotel.

A couple of days when I was heading to the airport for an emergency visit to my hometown, I almost forgot to check every drawers as I was in rush that day in a fear that I would miss the flight. Thus, I forget to carry the documents along with me that predominantly would be in the second drawer of my table. Those papers are crucial to me, as it contains few reports of my mother who is in hospital right now, and apparentely, her surgery is planned next week.

Therefore, I kindly request you if you could send me a scan copy of it via mail and also the papers through courier service, so that I could submit it to the hospital for a smooth procedure and hassle free operation.

I would be looking forward to hearing it back from you.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Yours faithfully,

Chandan Patel

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points: the location of the papers is identified, their importance is explained, and a clear request is made to the manager. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter. However, the development of ideas is slightly hampered by grammatical inaccuracies, which occasionally make the narrative flow feel a bit disjointed. For instance, the explanation of why the papers are important is clear, but the phrasing is somewhat repetitive. Overall, the task requirements are fully met, and the purpose of the letter is clear to the reader.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organized into distinct paragraphs, each serving a specific purpose. The progression of ideas is clear, moving from the situation to the request. Cohesive devices such as 'Thus', 'Therefore', and 'also' are used to link sentences, although some transitions feel slightly mechanical. The use of referencing is generally effective, though there are minor issues with pronoun clarity in the opening paragraph. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the introduction, the body of the explanation, and the final request, which helps the reader follow the logic of the letter.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is sufficient for the task, allowing for clear communication. You use some relevant terms such as 'predominantly', 'crucial', and 'consideration'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'scan copy of it' (should be 'scanned copy') and 'hearing it back' (should be 'hearing back'). While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precise control over word forms and common collocations. Expanding your range of formal vocabulary would help elevate the quality of your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text, such as 'which I forgot to take it' (redundant object pronoun), 'check every drawers' (plural noun error), and 'it contains few reports' (article/quantifier error). Additionally, there are tense inconsistencies, such as 'I forget to carry' instead of 'I forgot'. These errors are frequent enough to be noticeable but do not prevent the reader from understanding your message. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and correct verb tenses will improve your accuracy.
