Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to report some missing papers I forgot at your hotel on 28th Febuary, 2026, when attending Expo Event organized at your party hall. My name is Yashkumar Patel and my room number was 203H.

Let me explain my situation at the time of checking out I was in a pretty hurry to meet my family as they organized a little party at our home for my brother's homecoming. Also, the whole day was very hectic for me to begin with; I was very overwhelmed by seeing a huge crowd from all over the states as well as some big celebrities who were also invited. So, at the time of checkout, I completely forgot about my documents.

Moreover, the paperwork which i left behind is very crucial as it is going to help me in my next presentation at my workplace. So, if you can find that documents and send them to me as soon as possible by mail it will be v

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The letter addresses all three bullet points: the location of the papers, their importance, and the requested action. However, the response is incomplete, ending abruptly mid-sentence ('it will be v'). This failure to complete the final paragraph significantly impacts the task achievement, as the request to the manager is not fully articulated. While the ideas are relevant and the tone is appropriate for a formal letter, the lack of a conclusion and the unfinished nature of the final sentence prevent a higher score. To improve, ensure that all parts of the prompt are fully developed and that the letter reaches a natural, complete conclusion.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter follows a logical structure, with an introduction, a body paragraph explaining the situation, and the start of a concluding paragraph. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different stages of the letter. Cohesive devices such as 'Moreover' and 'So' are used to link ideas, though the flow is interrupted by the abrupt ending. The referencing is generally clear, and the reader can follow the narrative of the event. To improve, ensure that transitions between paragraphs are smoother and that the letter is fully completed to maintain coherence throughout.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, with some attempts at more descriptive language such as 'hectic', 'overwhelmed', and 'crucial'. There are minor spelling errors, such as 'Febuary' instead of 'February'. The range of vocabulary is sufficient to convey the message, but it lacks the precision and sophistication required for higher bands. To improve, focus on using more precise collocations and ensure accurate spelling of common words. Expanding your range of formal expressions would also help elevate the tone of your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'I forgot at your hotel' (should be 'I left at your hotel') and 'if you can find that documents' (should be 'those documents'). Punctuation is generally functional, though there are some run-on sentences. While the errors do not significantly impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. To improve, pay closer attention to subject-verb agreement and the correct use of demonstrative pronouns (this/that/these/those).
