Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir,

I am writing this letter to inform you that last week on 27th July 2026 when I came to stay at Niagara hotel, I forgot my work permit and passport in the room. I was stayed in room number 128 on 1st floor which was closed to the lift. I kept my documents in the locker of the wardrobe of the bedroom.

These two documents are essential for my upcoming USA visa appointment which is on 5th August 2026. I need those documents as soon as possible. I am requesting to mail my work permit and passport through Purlator, as they are fastest for the mailing.

Below is the delivery on which you have to deliver.

Address: Unit 1, 27 Melrose Avenue South, Hamilton ON L8M 2Y4.

Kindly also with the documents also shared your Interac ID so that I will send the cost of mailing.

Yours sincerely,

Heli Kothari

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly identified the location of the documents (room 128), explained their importance regarding your upcoming visa appointment, and provided specific instructions to the manager regarding the courier service and payment. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a hotel manager. The ideas are well-developed and the purpose of the communication is clear from the outset. You have met all the requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organized, with a clear progression from the purpose of the letter to the specific details and the requested action. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the introduction, the explanation, and the call to action. Cohesive devices such as 'These two documents' and 'Below is the delivery' help guide the reader through the text. While the flow is generally smooth, some transitions could be slightly more sophisticated to improve the overall cohesion, but the structure remains clear and easy to follow throughout.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly, such as 'essential', 'upcoming', and 'requesting'. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'shared your Interac ID' (should be 'provide' or 'send') and 'fastest for the mailing' (should be 'fastest mailing service'). These errors do not impede communication, but they prevent the vocabulary from reaching a higher band. Expanding your range of formal business terminology would further improve your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The letter contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text. For example, 'I was stayed' should be 'I stayed', 'closed to the lift' should be 'close to the lift', and 'delivery on which you have to deliver' is awkward phrasing. While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your request, they indicate a lack of consistent control over verb tenses and prepositional usage. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and sentence construction will help improve your accuracy.
