Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear sir or madam,
I am writing to inform you that I have forgot some important documents in your hotel while leaving in a hurry. I placed the papers in the cupboard of the room 201, where I stayed for a night last Saturday.
These documents contain some important data, which is very important for my upcoming work project. The project is due in a week. In the absence of these papers, I absolutely can't complete my project and might not submit it on time. This may cause significant financial loss or even loss of my position in a worse-case scenario.
Could you please find the papers and keep them safely with you until I come to collect them in the next two days. I would be really grateful for your help, as it can save me from a significant loss.
I look forward to hearing back from you.
Yours sincerely,
Sukhmandeep

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly identified the location of the papers (cupboard of room 201), explained their importance regarding your work project and the potential consequences of losing them, and provided a clear request for the manager to secure them. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a hotel manager. The ideas are well-developed and the purpose of the letter is clear from the outset. You have met all the requirements of the task effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized, with a clear progression of ideas from the initial notification to the explanation of importance and finally the request for action. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate these distinct points. Cohesive devices such as 'In the absence of these papers' and 'as it can save me' are used effectively to link ideas. The flow is smooth, and the letter is easy to follow throughout. The structure is consistent with standard formal letter-writing conventions.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly and professionally. Phrases like 'upcoming work project', 'significant financial loss', and 'worse-case scenario' are used accurately. While the vocabulary is functional and appropriate for the context, it lacks a degree of sophistication or 'less common' lexical items that would elevate the score to the highest bands. However, there are no errors in word choice or collocation that impede communication, and the tone remains consistently formal.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. There is a minor grammatical error in the first sentence: 'I have forgot' should be 'I have forgotten' (present perfect). Aside from this, the grammar is generally accurate, and the punctuation is correct. You successfully employ complex sentences to explain the consequences of losing the documents. The majority of your sentences are error-free, and the minor slip does not interfere with the clarity of your request.
