Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing this letter to request you to send me some documents that were left accidently at your hotel Westwood, Hamilton.
I clearly remember that I brought all my belongings with me while checking out from my room number 510. I stayed there from 25 July -30 July 2026. While handing over the room keys back at the reception, I believe I left a brown packet on the table there which had some important documents.
I was here on a business trip and these papers have all the summary and reports of my meetings. I have a presentation on the same in my office next week and I will need them urgently for reference.
Therefore, I am requesting you to kindly send me the packet through speed post. I will be able to receive it within 1-2 business days. Along with this, please share the overall cost that you will be bearing so that I can post a cheque to cover the same.
Thank you in advance and looking forward to receiving the documents soon.
Yours faithfully,
Neha George

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points of the task. You clearly identified the location of the papers (the reception desk), explained their importance (business reports for a presentation), and provided a clear request for action (sending them via speed post and arranging payment). The tone is appropriate for a formal business letter, and the purpose is clear from the outset. The ideas are well-developed and relevant to the scenario provided, meeting all the requirements of the prompt effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The letter is logically organized, with each paragraph serving a distinct purpose. The progression of ideas is smooth, moving from the identification of the problem to the explanation of its importance, and finally to the proposed solution. You used cohesive devices such as 'Therefore', 'Along with this', and 'While' to link your ideas effectively. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different sections of the letter, making it easy for the reader to follow your request.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly and professionally. Phrases like 'business trip', 'urgently for reference', and 'cover the same' demonstrate a good command of formal language. There is one minor error with 'accidently' (should be 'accidentally'), but this does not impede communication. The vocabulary is generally accurate and appropriate for the context of a formal request to a hotel manager.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
Your grammar is generally accurate, and you have demonstrated a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. For example, 'While handing over the room keys back at the reception, I believe I left a brown packet...' is a well-constructed complex sentence. There are minor slips, such as 'I have a presentation on the same' (which is slightly unnatural; 'on the subject' or 'regarding these' would be better) and 'I brought all my belongings with me while checking out' (where 'when' might be more precise). However, these errors are infrequent and do not hinder understanding.
