Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Mr Kapoor,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter to request you to find my important documents in your hotel, which I forgot to take back during check-out time.

I think I left the papers maybe in conference room or at reception area, because while I attended business meeting in conference room, I seated on a first table and would be leave it due to emergency situation. Apart from that, there is also chances of left the documents at reception desk while I was paying the hotel bills. As it is really necessary for me to get back my valuable papers soon, because it contains the details regarding current and upcoming project work and business deal papers. Therefore, If I will not receive it on time, it will create troubles for me. Moreover, as a manager of my company, this small mistake results into negative markings on my performance record and build questions on my professional responsibilities. Also, convey the accurate details to my colleagues regarding current project work must needed for completing our target and meet deadline.

It would be appreciated if you could ask your housekeeping staff regarding my documents. Also, it would be also helpful to inquire at lost and found counter, if they find any clues or evidence related to papers. I am ready to pay the charges of delivery and I will send you my residential address.

I hope you consider my request and give me positive response in this matter soon. I look forward to hearing back you.

Yours faithfully,

Twinkle

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly identify the potential locations of the documents (conference room or reception), explain their importance regarding your professional responsibilities and project deadlines, and provide a clear request for the manager to assist in locating them. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter, and the purpose is clear throughout. To reach a higher band, ensure that the explanation of why the papers are important is more concise and avoids repetitive phrasing, as some sentences, such as those regarding your performance record, are slightly wordy and could be more direct.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter follows a logical structure with clear paragraphing. Each paragraph serves a distinct purpose, which helps the reader follow your request easily. You use some cohesive devices like 'Apart from that', 'Therefore', and 'Moreover' to link ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical or forced. For instance, the transition between the importance of the papers and the impact on your performance could be smoother. Additionally, ensure that referencing is always precise; for example, 'it' in 'If I will not receive it' is slightly ambiguous as it refers to plural 'papers'. Improving the flow between sentences would enhance the overall coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'housekeeping staff', 'professional responsibilities', and 'residential address'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'negative markings on my performance record' (which sounds slightly unnatural) and 'build questions on my professional responsibilities' (should be 'raise questions'). While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the use of vocabulary from being considered 'flexible' or 'precise'. To improve, focus on using more natural collocations and idiomatic expressions suitable for formal business correspondence.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While many sentences are clear, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text. Examples include 'there is also chances of left the documents' (should be 'there is also a chance I left the documents'), 'If I will not receive it' (should be 'If I do not receive them'), and 'must needed' (should be 'are necessary'). These errors are frequent enough to be noticeable but do not prevent the reader from understanding your message. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of modal verbs and conditional structures.
