Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir / Madam,

My name is Husna. Iam writing this letter to inform you that I had missplaced some of my important documents at the hotel during my recent visit.

I attended a seminar on 5th August at your hotel The Taj Banjara. This meeting took place at the conference hall on 2nd floor room number 3.

that was the last time I checked my papers before leaving for lunch, so I think I might had left the papers at table number 10 under the desk.

These papers have important documents that I have been working for so long related to health and safety procedures during pregnancy. I have another conference in Delthi on 26th of this month where I am suppose to present this seminar.

I kindly request you to ask your housekeping staff to check if they can find the paper at the conference room or kindly check in cctv fotage for the location of papers and let me know at the earliest. I will be sharing my contact number as well as address so your can send it to me through courier. my contact number [redacted phone], address is 2-3-118 st james rd-2.

I would appriciate if you can look into this matter at the earliest and connect to me through my phone number.

Thankyou

Kindregards

Husna

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly identified the location of the papers, explained their significance regarding your upcoming conference, and provided specific instructions for the manager. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a hotel manager. To reach a higher band, ensure that all details are presented with greater precision; for example, the explanation of why the papers are important could be slightly more detailed to emphasize the urgency of the situation. Overall, the task is fully completed with a clear purpose throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized into distinct paragraphs, each serving a specific purpose. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'I attended', 'These papers', and 'I kindly request' to link ideas. However, the flow between sentences could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words and transition phrases. Some transitions feel slightly mechanical or repetitive. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the progression of ideas is clear, moving from the problem to the explanation and finally to the requested action. Improving the variety of cohesive devices would enhance the overall flow.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'seminar', 'housekeeping', and 'footage'. However, there are several spelling errors, such as 'missplaced', 'Delthi', 'housekeping', 'fotage', and 'appriciate'. These errors are noticeable but do not impede the reader's understanding of the message. To improve, focus on proofreading for common spelling mistakes and try to incorporate more sophisticated collocations or synonyms to elevate the tone. For instance, instead of 'I had missplaced', using 'I inadvertently left' would show better control.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical slips, such as 'I might had left' (should be 'might have left'), 'I am suppose to' (should be 'supposed to'), and 'your can send' (should be 'you can send'). While these errors are frequent, they do not prevent the reader from understanding your request. To improve, pay closer attention to verb tenses and modal verb constructions. Increasing the frequency of error-free sentences by proofreading for subject-verb agreement and auxiliary verb usage will help you achieve a higher band score.
