Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter to inform you that during my stay in your hotel, I forgot some important papers in the room.

As I checked out of your hotel last evening, I was waiting for the cab to arrived at hotel to picked me up. If you remembered I was in the waiting area in front of the reception desk, where I was reading some important papers. And then only the taxy arrives, but in hurry, I think may be I forgot that documents on the table or maybe on the nearby couch.

The papers I forgot were very important for me because It is my personal documents, that I carried with me for the interview purpose. If they lost, I may not be able to attend the interview. So, I am requesting you to handover that documents to my brother who stay in the same city. He will come with identity proof and also will make you talk with me.

Thank you for your time, Madam.

Your sincerely,

Vrushti Patel

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The letter addresses all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly state where the papers were left (reception area or couch), explain their importance (interview documents), and provide a clear instruction to the manager regarding your brother. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter, although the development of ideas is slightly hindered by grammatical inaccuracies. To reach a higher band, ensure that the explanation of why the papers are important is slightly more detailed to fully satisfy the 'well-developed' requirement of higher bands.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter follows a logical structure with a clear introduction, body, and conclusion. Paragraphing is used to separate the different points of the task. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and limited. For example, the transition between the arrival of the taxi and the loss of the documents is a bit abrupt. Improving the flow between sentences using a wider variety of linking words (e.g., 'consequently', 'furthermore', 'as a result') would enhance the overall coherence of the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'inform', 'identity proof', and 'reception desk'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'taxy' (spelling error) and 'handover that documents' (should be 'hand over those documents'). The vocabulary is functional but lacks the precision and flexibility required for higher bands. Focusing on correct pluralization and common collocations will help improve your score in this area.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

There is a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but the accuracy is inconsistent. You struggle with verb tenses and agreement, such as 'waiting for the cab to arrived' (should be 'arrive') and 'taxy arrives' (should be 'arrived'). Additionally, 'If they lost' is an incorrect conditional structure (should be 'If they are lost'). While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your message, they occur frequently enough to limit the score. Focus on mastering basic tense consistency and subject-verb agreement.
