Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Manager,

I hope this letter finds you well.

My name is Sam Mistry, and I work at kitchen section in your hotel. The reason why I am writing this to inform you about the application papers which I left in front cabin at your office. Since you already know, I have got my certification of food handling and I have applied for the access pass. Moreover, these papers are very important to me because it was very hard for me to get certification. That's why I am requesting you to put it at safe place.

The only thing you need to do is check all the information and sign at the end of application papers. I have already marked crosses where you need to sign.

Do let me know if there are any mistakes and if there is not any mistakes, please forward it to the main office.

Yours faithfully,

Sam Mistry

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The letter addresses all three bullet points: the location of the papers, their importance, and the requested action. However, the development of these points is somewhat limited. The explanation of why the papers are important is brief, and the context regarding the 'kitchen section' and 'access pass' is slightly confusing given the prompt implies you were a visitor attending a meeting. While the purpose is clear, the tone is a bit informal for a formal request to a hotel manager. To reach a higher band, you should expand on the significance of the documents and ensure the narrative context aligns more naturally with the scenario provided in the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter follows a logical structure with a clear opening and closing. Paragraphing is used to separate the introduction, the explanation, and the request. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical. Phrases like 'Moreover' and 'That's why' are used, but the flow between sentences could be smoother. The referencing is generally clear, though the transition between the introduction and the body paragraph feels a bit abrupt. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring a more natural progression of ideas would enhance the overall coherence of the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks variety and precision. You use basic terms like 'important' and 'check'. There are some minor collocation issues, such as 'work at kitchen section' (should be 'work in the kitchen') and 'put it at safe place' (should be 'keep them in a safe place'). While the meaning is always clear, the range of vocabulary is limited to common, everyday words. To improve, try to incorporate more specific professional terminology and ensure correct preposition usage to sound more natural and precise.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The letter contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'writing this to inform' (missing 'letter'), 'in front cabin' (missing article), and 'if there is not any mistakes' (subject-verb agreement error: 'are not any'). While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding the message, they are frequent enough to impact the overall fluency. To achieve a higher score, focus on subject-verb agreement, article usage, and ensuring that complex sentences are constructed accurately without missing auxiliary verbs.
