Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir,

I am writing you this because, 2 days ago i stayed at your hotel and i left my important documents in the room, which i realized later when i was unable to find them when i reached my place.

My name is Sahilpreet Singh, i had the booking at your hotel on 22-june and i had a really good time during my stay. My reservation was for the room no 403, After the completion of my stay i left the hotel room in hurry as i had to travel to vancouver and it was 14 hours of drive from your hotel. I think i left my important document which include educational certificates and other important papers.

It will be really healpfull if you can ask the staff to take a look and let me know if the document are there or if you already have it can you please parcel those documens on my current address. My current address is 123 clearbrook rd, abbotsford, BC, Canada

Respectfully

Sahilpreet Singh

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The letter addresses all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly state where the papers were left (room 403), explain their importance (educational certificates), and provide a clear request for the manager to search for them and mail them to your address. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter, although the opening 'Dear Sir' is slightly less standard than the suggested 'Dear Sir or Madam'. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, ensuring the reader understands the situation and the necessary actions required to resolve the issue.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter follows a logical progression, moving from the purpose of the letter to the details of the stay and finally the request for assistance. Paragraphing is present, though the structure could be improved by separating the introduction, the details of the stay, and the call to action into distinct, clearly defined paragraphs. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'which I realized later' and 'as I had to travel', but the flow is occasionally interrupted by repetitive sentence structures and minor punctuation errors that make the transitions feel slightly mechanical.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing you to convey your message clearly. You use functional terms like 'reservation', 'completion', and 'educational certificates'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there are minor errors in word choice and spelling, such as 'healpfull' instead of 'helpful' and 'documens' instead of 'documents'. To reach a higher band, you should aim to incorporate more precise vocabulary related to hotel services and formal correspondence, and ensure greater attention to spelling accuracy in your final review.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly regarding capitalization (e.g., 'i' instead of 'I', 'vancouver' instead of 'Vancouver') and run-on sentences. For example, the sentence 'My name is Sahilpreet Singh, i had the booking...' contains a comma splice. Additionally, there are issues with subject-verb agreement and article usage, such as 'if the document are there'. While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your request, they are frequent enough to limit the score in this criterion.
