You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter to inform you that I might left my papers in my hotel room 1608 floor 16.

This paper is very important to me because it is my daughters affidavit of consent. My daughter lives in Philippines and to get her passport renewal, she needs to have the Original copy of Affidavit of consent from the Philippine consulate here in Canada. I am not able to get another copy of the consent since I don't have time to go to the consulate personally this month.

I would like to request to keep the papers if found in my room and keep it. Please let me know what is the best time this week to get it. Thank you so much for having the time to read my email. I hope to hear from you soon.

sincerely,

Josel Patangan

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The letter covers all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly state where the papers were left (room 1608), explain their importance (passport renewal for your daughter), and provide a clear request for the manager to secure them and arrange a pickup. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter. However, the development of ideas is somewhat brief. To reach a higher band, you could expand slightly on the urgency of the situation or provide more specific details about the appearance of the papers to assist the staff in locating them. Overall, the task is fully addressed.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized into three distinct paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your request. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'because' and 'since' to link ideas. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes a bit mechanical. To improve, you could use a wider range of cohesive devices (e.g., 'consequently', 'furthermore', or 'in addition') to connect your sentences more fluidly. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the overall structure is clear and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You use a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly, such as 'affidavit of consent' and 'passport renewal'. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'I might left' (should be 'I might have left') and the repetition of 'keep it' in the final paragraph. While the vocabulary is adequate for the task, it lacks the variety and precision required for higher bands. Incorporating more sophisticated collocations or synonyms would enhance the quality of your writing. The spelling is generally accurate throughout the letter.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text. For example, 'I might left' is incorrect; it should be 'I might have left'. Additionally, 'This paper is' should be plural ('These papers are') to match the context. There are also minor punctuation and article errors, such as 'in Philippines' (should be 'in the Philippines'). While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and verb tenses will help improve your accuracy.
