Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

The intention of my writing today is to bring up and inquiry regarding my educational papers which I lost in your Royal Hotel.

To begin with, I attended my cousin brother's birthday celebration at around 11 o'clock. I came up there directly from the college after completing my admission process. Therefore, I carried a few marksheets with me in my college bag. I left this bag somewhere in the celebration hall.

Besides this, these educational documents is so indispensable for me to start my further process. Finding this bag is quite necessary.

Furthermore, I firmly request you that if you could check the CCTV cameras to find out this vital bag and documents in it. It would be grateful and appreciated.

I sincerely value your support in this matter. Additionally, keeping open and consistent communication with each other would be highly beneficial.

Kind Regards,

Mike Patel

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The letter covers all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly state where you think the papers were left (the celebration hall), explain their importance (needed for your admission process), and provide a clear request for the manager to check CCTV. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter, though some phrasing is slightly unnatural. The ideas are relevant and the purpose of the letter is immediately clear to the reader. To reach a higher band, ensure that the explanation of why the papers are important is slightly more detailed to fully develop the ideas.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organised with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. You use some cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'Besides this', and 'Furthermore' to link your ideas. However, some of these transitions feel a bit mechanical or slightly misused in context. For instance, 'Besides this' does not perfectly bridge the two ideas presented. The paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter, and the progression of information is easy to follow throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using words like 'indispensable', 'vital', and 'consistent'. However, there are some awkward collocations and word choices. For example, 'bring up and inquiry' should be 'make an inquiry', and 'cousin brother' is redundant as 'cousin' is sufficient. Additionally, 'It would be grateful' is grammatically incorrect; you should say 'I would be grateful'. While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precise control over word choice and collocation to reach the higher bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement ('these educational documents is' should be 'are') and awkward phrasing ('I request you that if you could check'). While these errors are noticeable, they do not prevent the reader from understanding your message. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct construction of formal requests. Using more varied complex structures, such as conditional sentences or passive voice, would also help demonstrate a wider grammatical range.
