Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Manager,
I am writing this letter to inform you that I have left some important documents in your hotel where we stayed for 2 days on this weekend. I am extremely sorry to bother you like this but these documents are very essential for me.
I am not quite sure about the location of papers but it can be either on the left side of the table in the room or in the drawer. Documents includes my Work Permit, Sin Number and Passport as well, which holds great importance about my residency.
I kindly request you if you can look for it and inform me promptly so that I can come to pick up documents before leaving this place.
Here I am leaving my contact details and you can contact me at [redacted phone] if you get any information.
I am looking forward your quick response. I appreciate for your time and hospitality.
Yours Faithfully,
Manpreet Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly state where the papers might be, explain their importance (Work Permit, SIN, and Passport), and provide a clear request for the manager to assist. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a hotel manager. The ideas are well-developed and the purpose of the letter is clear from the outset. You have covered all requirements of the task effectively, ensuring the reader understands the urgency of the situation.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, with each paragraph focusing on a specific aspect of the task. The progression of ideas is smooth, moving from the purpose of the letter to the location of the items, the request for assistance, and finally the contact details. Cohesive devices such as 'so that' and 'in order to' (implied) are used, though the flow could be slightly improved with more varied transition words. Overall, the structure is coherent and easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task. Phrases like 'extremely sorry to bother you' and 'holds great importance' are appropriate. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'on this weekend' (should be 'this weekend') and 'look for it' (should be 'look for them' to agree with 'documents'). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, using more precise collocations would elevate the score. The spelling is generally accurate throughout the letter.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'Documents includes' (subject-verb agreement error; should be 'include') and 'I am looking forward your quick response' (missing preposition; should be 'looking forward to your'). Additionally, 'Sin Number' should be 'SIN' as 'Number' is redundant. Despite these errors, the meaning is never obscured, and the grammar is generally functional. To reach a higher band, focus on ensuring subject-verb agreement and correct preposition usage.
