Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I would like to express my deep sadness because I have left important work-related documents in your hotel.

Last week, when I was staying with my family in your reputable hotel to spend our 7 days holiday, having fun and enjoying our vacation together; I left my suitcase in the bathroom in the second floor beside the conference hall.

Moreover, my suitcase has a lot of crucial documents related to my business and I have a meeting after two days. If I didn't get those documents as soon as possible, I would be fired from my job.

Therefore, I would be grateful, if you helped me getting back my suitcase before that meeting, and thank you in advance.

If you require any further information about me or even my suitcase, I will be ready for that, and thank you one more time

Best regards,

Jack Matt

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The letter covers all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly state where the papers were left (the bathroom on the second floor), explain their importance (business documents, risk of losing your job), and provide a clear request for assistance. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. To improve, you could expand slightly on the description of the suitcase or the specific contents to make the request more persuasive, but you have successfully fulfilled the requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body, and conclusion. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Moreover' and 'Therefore' to link your ideas. However, the paragraphing is a bit fragmented; the second and third paragraphs could be better integrated to improve the flow. Additionally, some transitions feel slightly mechanical. To reach a higher band, focus on using a wider variety of cohesive devices and ensuring that the progression between sentences is smoother and less repetitive.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'reputable', 'crucial', and 'documents'. There are some minor issues with collocation and word choice, such as 'deep sadness' (which is a bit dramatic for a lost suitcase) and 'getting back my suitcase' (which could be more formal). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the sophistication and precision required for higher bands. Try to incorporate more natural collocations related to business and travel.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'I have left' (should be 'I left' as it refers to a specific past event), 'in the second floor' (should be 'on the second floor'), and 'I have a meeting after two days' (should be 'in two days'). The conditional sentence 'If I didn't get... I would be fired' is a good attempt at a complex structure, though the tense usage is slightly off. Focus on improving your control over prepositions and past tense consistency.
