Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I would like to let you know that I booked room number 202 two days ago. I appreciate your service and help during that time. But, I have one problem that I left my important documents in that room. The documents are very confidential and important. I have to submit that document before next Monday.
So, I am requesting to you that if you can go to my room, get the document and send it to me, that would be very helpful. The documents are in the second shelve of the cupboard on the right. If you find any difficulties, feel free to reply to me. I can understand that this is my mistake but please try to understand my situation and help me if you can.
Thank you for your time and understanding. I look forward to your reply. I am attaching my address in this letter.
your faithful,
SM

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have addressed all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly identified where the papers were left (room 202, second shelf), explained their importance (confidential and time-sensitive), and made a clear request for assistance. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter. To reach a higher band, you could provide more specific details about the documents to help the staff locate them more easily, and ensure the closing is more standard for a formal letter (e.g., 'Yours faithfully'). Overall, the task is fully addressed.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is logically organized into three distinct paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your request. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'So' and 'If you find any difficulties', to link your ideas. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes a bit mechanical. To improve, try using a wider variety of linking words and phrases to create smoother transitions between your explanation of the problem and your request for help. The paragraphing is appropriate and supports the overall structure of the letter.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly, such as 'confidential', 'appreciate', and 'requesting'. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation. For example, 'second shelve' should be 'second shelf', and 'I am requesting to you' is slightly unnatural; 'I am writing to request your assistance' would be more standard. While the vocabulary is adequate for the task, incorporating more precise collocations would elevate your score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'I have one problem that I left' (should be 'the problem that I left' or 'the problem is that I left') and 'I am attaching my address in this letter' (which is slightly redundant as you are writing a letter). The error 'your faithful' should be 'Yours faithfully'. Despite these errors, the meaning is always clear, and the grammar does not impede communication. Increasing the variety of complex structures would improve this score.
