Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir /Madam
I hope you are doing well. My name is Amit, and I was one of your guests on 12 August at your hotel. I am writing this letter to inform you that I stayed in room number 201, and in a hurry on aug 13th during checkout, I forgot my extremely important documents in one left side night stands beside my bed.
The documents that I left are most important for my next project, which cannot be completed without those papers. The papers are in big plastic documents containing files, and the " Don't Open " sign is written on top of the folder, which needs to be handled by safe hands.
I know that your schedule is busy, and it is hard to complete guests' requests and orders as soon as possible. You can update me on whether you will send me those papers through courier, and I agree to pay the courier charges, or one of my friends will receive them from the hotel. Kindly update me on how you will proceed with either of these options so that I can arrange things accordingly.
Thank you so much for your time and support.
With Regards
Amit

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly identified the location of the papers (room 201, nightstand), explained their importance (necessary for a project), and provided clear instructions to the manager regarding their retrieval (courier or friend collection). The tone is appropriate for a formal letter. To reach a higher band, ensure that your explanations are slightly more nuanced; for instance, describing the specific nature of the 'project' could have added more depth to the justification of why the papers are important.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body, and conclusion. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task, which aids readability. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'The documents that I left' and 'either of these options', to link ideas. However, the flow could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words (e.g., 'consequently', 'furthermore', or 'in addition') to connect sentences more fluidly. The paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter format.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'checkout', 'courier', and 'proceed'. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'in one left side night stands' (should be 'in one of the nightstands on the left side') and 'handled by safe hands' (should be 'handled carefully'). While these do not impede communication, they prevent the use of more sophisticated, natural-sounding language. Expanding your vocabulary to include more precise descriptive terms would enhance your score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is generally effective. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'in a hurry on aug 13th' (needs capitalization and better phrasing) and 'The papers are in big plastic documents' (should be 'The papers are in a large plastic folder'). Punctuation is generally clear, though there are minor issues with article usage and prepositional phrases. The majority of your sentences are clear and error-free, but more consistent control over complex structures is needed for a higher band.
