Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing this to you as I have forgotten my most important documents in my hotel room. By the way, I would like to appreciate the great services and I had a great experience staying there.

I stayed in 305- B room, a night before my checkout time I was working on some business project and at that time that papers were with me. After that I took a shower and I think I mistakely kept that documents on the side table beside the bed, which I forgot to take while leaving next morning.

As I am currently working on my future project all my important data are there on that papers. I really do not want to loose it as it will consume a lot work and time to collect that data again and I will miss my deadline to submit my assignment.

I would really appreciate if your staff could find me that documents and I also want you to post me that papers as soon as possible. I will send you the expenses it would take and also put a great review for your services on website.

Thankyou for understanding and I hope you will send me those papers at earliest possible.

Regards,

D

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly identify the location (room 305-B, on the side table), explain the importance of the documents (a business project and assignment deadline), and provide a clear request for action (locating and posting the papers). The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a hotel manager. The ideas are well-developed and the purpose of the letter is clear from the beginning. To reach a higher band, ensure that the opening and closing are consistently formal, as the current sign-off is slightly informal.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task, which helps the reader follow your narrative easily. You use some cohesive devices such as 'After that', 'As I am', and 'I would really appreciate'. However, the flow could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words to connect sentences more fluidly. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the overall structure is coherent, making the letter easy to read and understand.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task. You use relevant terms like 'checkout time', 'business project', and 'deadline'. There are some minor errors in word choice, such as 'mistakely' (mistakenly) and 'loose' (lose), and some phrasing is slightly repetitive. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your message clearly, it lacks the precision and sophistication required for higher bands. Expanding your use of collocations and ensuring accurate spelling would significantly improve your score in this area.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'I have forgotten my most important documents' (should be 'left' rather than 'forgotten' in this context), 'that papers' (should be 'those papers'), and 'at earliest possible' (should be 'at the earliest possible'). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are some minor errors in sentence construction. The errors do not impede communication, but they are frequent enough to prevent a higher band score.
