IELTS Writing Task 1 question

Write a letter to the manager of the hotel. In your letter

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Manager,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter to request you a search in your hotel as I have left my important documents during the recent visit with my friend.

Last Sunday, we have booked the table number 17 and I could remember that I showed those documents to my friend. However, I believe I forgot to keep them back in my bag.

The documents are very significant as they are related to the recent bought property. Although, I have original copy of the papers, I do not want anyone to misuse them. Moreover, the papers have the government stamp which is disturbing me the more.

I have noticed during the dinner that there are cameras in your hotel. I would appreciate it if could pull up the CCTV Footage and try to locate the documents. If you would able to find it please revert back on this email.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Yours faithfully,

Sukhman

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have addressed all three bullet points required by the task. You clearly identified where the papers were left (table 17), explained their importance (property documents with government stamps), and provided a clear request for the manager to check CCTV footage. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter. To reach a higher band, you could expand slightly on the consequences of losing the documents to show a more developed response. Overall, the purpose of the letter is clear and the requirements are fully met.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body, and conclusion. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'However', 'Moreover', and 'Although' to link your ideas. The paragraphing is sufficient for a short letter. To improve, ensure that your transitions between sentences are smoother; for example, the jump from mentioning the table number to the importance of the documents could be bridged more naturally. The referencing is generally clear, and the flow of information is easy to follow throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

Your vocabulary is adequate for the task and allows you to communicate your message clearly. You use some relevant terms like 'misuse', 'CCTV footage', and 'consideration'. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'request you a search' (should be 'request that you conduct a search') and 'disturbing me the more' (should be 'worrying me more'). Expanding your range of collocations and using more precise phrasing would help you achieve a higher score in this criterion.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'we have booked' (should be 'we booked'), 'I could remember' (should be 'I remember'), and 'If you would able to find it' (should be 'If you are able to find them'). These errors are frequent but do not impede communication. To improve, focus on verb tense consistency and the correct use of modal verbs. Increasing the variety of error-free complex sentences will help improve your score.
