Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to inform you about the loss of my important documents which i forget in your hotel. Yesterday, I came in your hotel for the birthday party celebration of one my friend. I forgot my papers somewhere in your hotel.

Those documents are very precious for me because there are few important job documents along with my passport. As i am going out of country after 3 days for my job work so i will have to have those documents otherwise i will not be able to travel and there will be a risk of losing my job too.

I would like to make you one request that if you can try to find those documents in your hotel as soon as possible. Also, if you find it can you please let me know ,so i can come to pick those papers.

I am hoping to hear prompt reply.

Yours faithfully,

Vipal Patel.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The letter addresses all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly state that you left the papers at the hotel, explain their importance (passport and job documents), and provide a clear request for the manager to assist in locating them. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a hotel manager. To improve, you could provide more specific details about where in the hotel you might have left them, such as the restaurant or the lobby, to help the staff search more effectively. Overall, the response is well-focused and fulfills the requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task, which helps the reader follow your message easily. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Also' and 'because' to link ideas. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate a wider range of cohesive devices and transition words to improve the flow between sentences. For example, instead of starting sentences with 'Also', you could use 'Furthermore' or 'In addition' to create a more sophisticated structure.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is sufficient to convey your message clearly, though it is somewhat repetitive and basic. Phrases like 'important documents' and 'job documents' are functional but lack variety. You use some appropriate terms such as 'precious' and 'prompt reply', which fit the formal context. To improve, aim to use more precise collocations and a broader range of vocabulary. For instance, instead of saying 'I forget', which is grammatically incorrect, you should use 'I inadvertently left' or 'misplaced'. Expanding your range of synonyms will help you achieve a higher score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

There are several grammatical errors that affect the accuracy of your writing. For example, 'i forget' should be 'I forgot' or 'I have left', and 'I came in your hotel' should be 'I visited your hotel'. Additionally, there are issues with article usage and sentence structure, such as 'I am going out of country' (should be 'out of the country'). While your meaning is always clear, the frequency of these errors prevents a higher score. Focus on subject-verb agreement and consistent tense usage to improve your accuracy.
