Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir/Madam,
Greetings of the day. I am writing to enquire about my office papers left in the hotel.
Last week on sunday, I had stayed in room 502 at Sunset Inn Hotel in the Suites building. Since I had to catch flight in the early morning, I had forgotten to pick my office documents which was left on the study table.
While I was busy with a client at mississuaga, I had not get the time to contact you earlier. The documents left in your hotel is highly important for me at the moment. Since those papers a special of my second client, I needed it in the fastest way possible.
Since I have meeting with the second client on Tuesday, it is impossible for me to travel in forth and back. I humbly request you to find it as soon as possible and deliver to my current address 4134 Dursley Creasant, Mississuaga.
I hope you will consider this as a prior. I look forward to seeing the documents before the meeting. Please, feel free to contact me on my phone [redacted phone] if you need any additional information.
Yours Faithfully,
Manpreet Singh Bawa

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: you identified the location of the papers (room 502), explained their importance (for a client meeting), and requested a specific action (delivery to your address). The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter, although the opening 'Greetings of the day' is slightly unconventional for a formal business letter. The ideas are relevant and clearly presented, ensuring the reader understands the purpose of your communication. To reach a higher band, ensure that the explanation of why the papers are important is slightly more detailed to fully develop the scenario.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear progression from the introduction to the specific request and closing. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the different points of the task. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Since', 'While', and 'Therefore' (implied), which help the flow of ideas. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical, and the connection between sentences could be smoother. For example, the transition between the explanation of the meeting and the request for delivery could be more fluid. Overall, the message is easy to follow throughout the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'enquire', 'documents', and 'humbly request'. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'fastest way possible' (instead of 'as quickly as possible') and 'consider this as a prior' (which is not standard usage; 'priority' would be correct). Spelling errors like 'mississuaga' and 'Creasant' (Crescent) also occur. While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the score from being higher. Expanding your range of formal business collocations would improve your lexical score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical slips, such as 'I had not get the time' (should be 'I did not get' or 'I had not had'), 'documents... is' (subject-verb agreement error; should be 'are'), and 'travel in forth and back' (should be 'travel back and forth'). Despite these errors, the meaning remains clear throughout the letter. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and consistent tense usage, particularly when describing past events and current needs. Increasing the variety of complex structures while maintaining accuracy will help you achieve a higher band.
