Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I hope this message finds you well. I am writing to inform you that I accidentally left some important documents at your restaurant today morning.
I clearly remember I was sitting on a table near to the window, close to the entrance and enjoying my coffee. When I left for my college and realized that I may have forgotten my papers. Unfortunately, I was on my way and cannot return back because I was so far away from your restaurant.
I want to clarify that these papers have a significant role in my final assessment, and I need to submit these document before its deadline.
Could you please confirm if someone found it? If you find it please contact me at [redacted phone] or email me at [redacted email]. I will be very thankful to you and will collect these from you.
Looking forward to hearing your response.
Yours faithfully,
Riya

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly identified the location of the papers, explained their importance regarding your final assessment, and provided a clear request for the manager to contact you. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a hotel manager. The ideas are relevant and logically developed, meeting the requirements of the task effectively. To reach a higher band, you could provide slightly more descriptive detail about the appearance of the papers to help the staff locate them more easily.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task. You have used basic cohesive devices such as 'Unfortunately' and 'If you find it' to link your ideas. However, the transition between the second and third sentences in the second paragraph is slightly abrupt. To improve, you could use more varied linking words or phrases to improve the flow between sentences and ensure the progression of ideas feels more natural and less mechanical.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You have an adequate range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Phrases like 'significant role' and 'final assessment' are appropriate for the context. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'today morning' (which should be 'this morning') and 'collect these from you' (which is slightly unnatural; 'retrieve them' would be better). While the vocabulary is sufficient for the task, incorporating a few more precise or less common collocations would help demonstrate a wider range of lexical control.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical errors. For example, 'I was sitting on a table' should be 'at a table', and 'submit these document' should be pluralized to 'documents'. Additionally, 'cannot return back' is redundant as 'return' already implies going back. There are also minor tense inconsistencies, such as 'realized' (past) following 'left' (past) but within a structure that could be more fluid. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and preposition usage will help improve your accuracy.
