Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to inform you that I forgot my personal documents in your hotel.

To begin with, I stayed in the hotel for two nights in suite 210, from 21st to 23rd July to attend a business conference. During the stay, I think I kept the documents in the left wardrobe, which is next to my bed. while checking out, I was in a rush to catch my flight, so I forgot about my certificates and I left them behind.

These documents have a significant importance in my life, because these could reveal some sensitive information about me, such as my identity and personal details. Additionally, people may misuse these documents to create fake and fraud identities, to perform anti-social activities.

As a result, I would request that you help in locating these documents by checking the suite thoroughly. In addition to that, I kindly request that you enquire the housekeeping department and verify the security cameras to ensure that the documents are not misplaced or mishandled. Finally, I would be grateful if you could send them by courier, to the below mentioned address.

I would appreciate your prompt attention to this matter.

Yours faithfully,

Raj kumar Pratap

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly identified the location of the papers (suite 210, left wardrobe), explained their importance regarding identity theft and sensitive information, and provided specific instructions for the manager (checking the room, consulting housekeeping, and using a courier). The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a hotel manager. The ideas are well-developed and the purpose of the letter is clear from the outset. You have fully satisfied the requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph serves a distinct purpose, moving from the situation to the explanation and finally the request. You use a range of cohesive devices effectively, such as 'To begin with', 'Additionally', 'As a result', and 'In addition to that'. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the flow of information is smooth. The referencing is clear throughout, and the letter follows a standard formal structure, which makes it easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate an adequate and generally accurate range of vocabulary. Phrases like 'business conference', 'sensitive information', and 'misused' are used correctly. There are some minor stylistic choices that could be improved for a more natural, professional tone, such as 'forgot my personal documents' (better: 'left my personal documents behind') and 'significant importance' (better: 'utmost importance'). However, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly and precisely throughout the letter.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Most sentences are error-free, and your control of grammar is generally strong. There are a few minor slips, such as 'enquire the housekeeping department' (should be 'enquire with' or 'ask the housekeeping department') and 'below mentioned address' (should be 'address mentioned below'). These errors are infrequent and do not impede communication. The punctuation is generally accurate, and the formal tone is maintained throughout the writing.
