Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,,
I am writing to express my concern regarding my important documents which I left in your hotel.
Last week my family and I visited to your hotel and it was a great experience. We had a great time over there. However, unfortunately, I left my papers in the room in which we are staying.
Actually, those papers are related to my work and it holds very confidential information related to my forthcoming business deal. Moreover, in that file there are some blank cheques which are signed. I am very worried about my papers. It was in the yellow color file which I kept in the table drawer of the room.
I would be grateful if you could talk to your employees about that file. Hopefully, they might get the papers. I kindly request that could you please send that papers at my address.
I look forward for your response.
Yours faithfully,
Kajal Sharma.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The letter covers all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly identify where the papers were left (the room, in the table drawer), explain their importance (confidential work documents and signed cheques), and state the desired action (talk to staff and send the documents). The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a hotel manager. To improve, you could provide more specific details about the room number or the dates of your stay to help the manager locate the items more efficiently, which would further develop the task requirements.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is logically organised with a clear introduction, body, and conclusion. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat basic. For example, the transition between the visit description and the loss of the papers is a bit abrupt. Using more varied linking words or phrases (e.g., 'Furthermore', 'Consequently', 'In light of this') would improve the flow. Paragraphing is used correctly, and the overall structure is easy to follow, though the progression could be smoother.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task. Phrases like 'confidential information' and 'forthcoming business deal' are well-chosen. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'visited to your hotel' (should be 'visited your hotel') and 'it holds very confidential information' (should be 'they hold' or 'it contains'). The vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, but it lacks the precision and variety required for a higher band score. Focusing on more natural collocations would be beneficial.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The letter uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'in which we are staying' (should be 'were staying' to match the past tense context) and 'send that papers' (should be 'those papers'). Additionally, there is a punctuation error in the opening: 'Dear Sir or Madam,,' contains an extra comma. While these errors are present, they do not impede communication, and the meaning remains clear throughout the letter. Increasing the variety of complex structures and proofreading for tense consistency would help improve this score.
