Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir/Madam,

I hope this message finds you well.

I amn writing to enquire about some of the crucial documents I left in the Hotel during my recent stay on July 10.

If I am not wrong, I believe I have left the documents in the cupboard which is right beside the bed. On that night, I was reviewing the documents and I mistakenly forgot to put those company documents in my office and bag. In addition, The next morning when I left the room I did my check well if I have taken every thing with me before checking out and thats how I ended up levaing the documents in the hotel room.

Moreover, those documents are highly sensitive and contains important Company's long term plans as well as financial reports. If those documents are leaked then it would cost a fortune for us but more importantly we will have will have to revise our future business plans.

If you find any such file or set of documents in the room, I request you to keep it safe with you and contact me as soon as possible and I will come visit and collect the documents from you personally. Also, inform your housekeeping staff for the same.

I hope to hear soon from you.

Yours faithfully,

Sankalp Diwate.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly identified the location of the documents, explained their significance to your business, and provided a clear request for the manager to follow. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter, and the purpose is clear from the outset. The ideas are well-developed, particularly the explanation of why the documents are sensitive. To reach a higher band, ensure that all details are consistent; for instance, you mention checking your belongings before leaving, which slightly contradicts the fact that you left the papers behind. Overall, the task is fully accomplished.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a formal closing. You use cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'In addition', and 'If you find' to link your ideas effectively. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different requirements of the task. While the flow is generally smooth, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the referencing in the second paragraph is a bit repetitive. However, the progression of ideas is clear, and the reader can easily follow your narrative from the initial enquiry to the final request for action.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your meaning with precision. Phrases like 'crucial documents', 'highly sensitive', and 'cost a fortune' are well-chosen and appropriate for the context. There are a few minor errors, such as 'levaing' (spelling) and 'contains' (subject-verb agreement with 'documents'), but these do not impede communication. You have attempted to use more sophisticated language, which is a positive sign. To improve, focus on ensuring that your word choices are consistently accurate and that you avoid minor spelling slips that can detract from the professional tone of a formal letter.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. There are several grammatical slips, such as 'I amn writing', 'I have left' (should be 'I left' for a specific past time), and 'we will have will have' (repetition). Additionally, there are minor punctuation and capitalization errors, such as 'Company's' (unnecessary capitalization) and 'The next morning' (unnecessary capitalization after a period). While these errors are noticeable, they do not prevent the reader from understanding your message. Increasing your focus on proofreading for subject-verb agreement and tense consistency would significantly improve your score.
