Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

My name is Manan Modi. Recently, I stayed at your hotel, while I was on my business trip and unfortunately, I forgot my important work papers in the room.

To begin with, my room number was C-402 and I vividly remember that I used the study table on the last day of my stay and I kept those papers in one of the drawers right beside the study table.

Those papers are very improtant because they are the business agreement papers and I have to submit them in two days to my manger to finalize the deal.

It would be appreciated if you could first check whether the papers are in one of the drawers or not. And if you find them, I would like you send them to my office via express curiour. Do not worry about the expances, I will take care of them.

I hope you would send me these documents as early as possible. I am looking forward to hearing back from you.

Your faithfully,

Manan Modi.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly identified the location of the papers (room C-402, in the drawer), explained their importance (business agreement for a deal), and provided a clear instruction to the manager regarding their retrieval and shipping. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter, and the purpose is clear throughout. The ideas are well-developed and relevant to the task requirements, ensuring the reader understands exactly what is needed.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the different points requested in the prompt. Cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'It would be appreciated if', and 'And if you find them' are used appropriately to guide the reader. The progression of ideas is smooth, and the letter maintains a consistent focus from start to finish, making it easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'vividly remember', 'finalize the deal', and 'express courier'. While the vocabulary is generally accurate and fits the context well, there are a few minor spelling errors (e.g., 'improtant', 'manger', 'curiour', 'expances'). These errors do not impede communication, but they prevent the response from reaching the highest band. Using more precise synonyms for common words would further enhance the quality of your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The letter uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Most sentences are clear and grammatically sound. There are a few minor errors, such as the incorrect sign-off 'Your faithfully' (should be 'Yours faithfully') and a slight punctuation issue with the comma usage in the opening sentence. However, these errors are infrequent and do not cause any confusion for the reader. The control over tense and sentence structure is generally good, supporting clear communication.
