Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing this letter because I believe I accidently left my important work papers in room 405 near the coffee table during my recent stay at your hotel.

I really need those papers as they are my work related papers and they consists some legal and private information. Unfortunately, I don't have more copies of the documents and I need them for my next meeting. So, losing them would create big difficulties for me.

I would really appreciate if you could take some time and ask the staff to look for those papers especially near the coffee table, and contact me if you find them. Additionally, I would also appreciate if you could arrange something to return those papers to me.

Thank you

Kind Regards

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The letter covers all three bullet points: the location of the papers, their importance, and the requested action. However, the response is 132 words long, which falls short of the 150-word minimum requirement. This under-length significantly impacts the development of ideas. While the purpose is clear, the explanation of why the papers are important is somewhat brief and repetitive. To improve, you should expand on the consequences of losing the documents or provide more specific details about the meeting to ensure the response is sufficiently developed and meets the length requirement.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body, and conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different points requested in the prompt. Cohesive devices such as 'Additionally' and 'Unfortunately' are used to link ideas, though the flow is somewhat basic. The progression of ideas is clear, but the overall structure could be enhanced by using a wider variety of linking words to create a more sophisticated flow between sentences and paragraphs.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks variety and precision. Phrases like 'work related papers' and 'big difficulties' are repetitive and simple. There are minor errors in word choice, such as 'consists some' instead of 'consists of' or 'contains'. To reach a higher band, you should aim to use more precise collocations and a wider range of vocabulary related to business and formal correspondence, moving away from generic descriptors.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The letter uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are grammatical inaccuracies, such as 'accidently' (spelling error) and 'consists some' (missing preposition). The sentence 'I would really appreciate if you could take some time and ask the staff' is grammatically functional but could be more formal. The punctuation is generally correct, but the overall control of complex structures needs more consistency to avoid minor errors.
