Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I hope you are doing well. I am writing this email to inform you that I came to your hotel yesterday, and I stayed there for a night in room number 101. This morning I had to rush for a meeting so I checked out early but unfortunately, I forgot my important documents on the bedside table.
Those papers are in a black file and are really important to me. It contains my passport, my work permit and my birth certificate. I am a businessman and I often travel overseas to attend my business meetings. It will be really difficult for me to get those documents again.
I kindly request you to check with the room service if they find my file. I request you to please call me back once you find it so I can come and pick it. I will be really greatful to you for this.
Looking forward to hear from you.
Yours sincerely,
Amandeep Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly identified the location of the papers (bedside table in room 101), explained their importance by listing the specific documents (passport, work permit, birth certificate), and provided a clear request for action. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a hotel manager. The ideas are well-developed and the purpose of the correspondence is clear from the outset. You have fully satisfied the requirements of the task.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph serves a distinct purpose, moving from the situation to the details of the items, and finally to the requested action. Cohesive devices such as 'unfortunately', 'those papers', and 'once you find it' are used effectively to link sentences. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the overall structure is easy to follow. The flow is natural, and the relationship between the ideas is clear throughout the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Phrases like 'inform you', 'rush for a meeting', and 'attend my business meetings' are accurate and appropriate for the context. There is a minor error in 'greatful' (should be 'grateful'), but this does not impede communication. While the vocabulary is functional and accurate, it could be elevated further by using more sophisticated collocations or less common lexical items to reach the highest band levels, though it is perfectly adequate for this task.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
The letter demonstrates a good control of grammar with a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are error-free. There is a minor subject-verb agreement error in 'It contains my passport...' (should be 'They contain' to refer back to 'papers'). Additionally, 'Looking forward to hear from you' should be 'Looking forward to hearing from you'. Despite these occasional slips, the meaning is never obscured, and the grammatical control is strong enough to maintain a professional tone throughout the letter.
