Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir,
I hope you are doing well.I am writing this letter to you for your assistance in locating some highly confidential documents which I believe I left in my room during my recent stay at your hotel.I checked out on Friday morning from room 401.
I believe I left the document in upper drawer of side table and it is enclosed in blue folder. These papers are extremely vital for me because it has original financial contracts and there are no duplicates exist for it.It would cause the important information leak as well as severe financial penalties to my company.
Could you arrange a staff member who can check for the document file in the room? I would really appreciate your favour and kindly secure it in the hotel safe after impounding. Please call on this number [redacted phone] once you find the documents and arrange to send it through courier service as earliest as possible.
Thank you for your time and attention to this urgent matter.
Yours Faithfully,
Suman

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly identified the location of the papers (room 401, upper drawer), explained their importance (original financial contracts, risk of leaks and penalties), and provided clear instructions to the manager (check the room, secure in a safe, and courier them). The tone is appropriate for a formal letter. The ideas are well-developed and the purpose of the communication is immediately clear to the reader. You have fulfilled all requirements of the task effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph serves a distinct purpose, moving from the introduction to the details of the lost items, and finally to the requested action. You use some cohesive devices such as 'I believe' and 'as well as', though the flow could be improved with more varied transition words between sentences. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different parts of your request. The overall structure is coherent and easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'confidential documents', 'financial contracts', and 'courier service'. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'impounding' (which is usually used for vehicles or illegal goods) and 'as earliest as possible' (which should be 'as soon as possible'). While these do not impede communication, they prevent the vocabulary from reaching a higher band. Expanding your range of collocations would enhance the professional tone of your writing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'there are no duplicates exist for it' (should be 'there are no duplicates') and 'arrange a staff member who can check' (should be 'arrange for a staff member to check'). Punctuation is generally functional, though there are some missing spaces after periods. Despite these errors, the meaning is always clear, and the grammar does not interfere with the reader's understanding of your request.
