Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Sir or Madam.

I hope this letter finds you in good health. My name is Aman Mehra, I resided at your hotel last week for three days in room number 205. I am writing this letter in regards to the important documents that I have forgotten in the hotel room.

I left the hotel on the 22nd of August around 4:00pm and then I boarded the plane and reaches my destination. During travelling, my document folder was in my hands all the time. However, I arrived at the office and checked the folder, I realised that some of the important documents were missing. I remember that the only time I took the documents out of the folder was during my stay at the hotel and I might have forgotten them at the table.

The documents are really important to me since these entail significant information about my clients. I will not be able to complete my projects without this paperwork. Ultimately, I will have to bear high loss.

I would really appreciate if you could look into this matter and contact the cleaning staff who might stumble on these documents while cleaning the room. In case, you got the documents, kindly contact me as soon as possible.

I will be thankful for the consideration of my request. I will be looking forward to hearing from you.

Yours sincerely,

Aman Mehra

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly identified where the papers were likely left (the table in room 205), explained their importance regarding client information and project completion, and provided a clear request for the manager to check with the cleaning staff. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a hotel manager. The ideas are well-developed and the purpose of the communication is clear from the outset. You have fully satisfied the requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a formal closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which aids readability. You use some cohesive devices such as 'However', 'Ultimately', and 'In case', which help the flow of ideas. While the transition between the second and third paragraphs could be slightly smoother, the overall progression of information is logical and easy to follow. Paragraphing is used appropriately throughout the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Phrases like 'resided at your hotel', 'entail significant information', and 'bear high loss' are effective. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'stumble on' (which should be 'stumbled upon' or 'found') and 'during travelling' (which is better expressed as 'during my journey'). However, these errors do not impede communication. You have used enough vocabulary to express your points with reasonable precision.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'reaches my destination' (should be 'reached') and 'In case, you got the documents' (should be 'If you find the documents'). Additionally, there is a minor punctuation error in the opening: 'Dear Sir or Madam.' should end with a comma. Despite these occasional errors, the majority of your sentences are clear and error-free, and your meaning is never in doubt. You show good control over basic and some complex structures.
