Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir,
I hope you are doing well. I am writing to inform about the university research papers that I think I have left on Hotel office desk.
First of all, I realize the importance of the documents and I wanted to report it yesterday the time I left from office. In addition, I put the note about papers for you on the notice board. I am also aware about the research details about the project which has been mentioned in those papers.
Secondly, I request you to do follow up check on papers and if possible, to let our hotel team know to keep them in a project file. Moreover, I checked with our senior team and received the confirmation that we have the duplication copy of them.
I would really emphasize the value and importance of hotel project research documents and would be more careful in future. Thank you for understanding.
Best Regards,
Adam Smith

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
You have addressed all three bullet points of the prompt: identifying the location of the papers, explaining their importance, and requesting action from the manager. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, while you mention the papers are important, you do not clearly explain the nature of the research or why it is critical, which makes the request feel slightly vague. Additionally, the tone is inconsistent; you mention having a duplicate copy, which contradicts the urgency of needing the manager to find the originals. To improve, ensure your ideas are fully extended and maintain a consistent, professional tone throughout the letter.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, and you use basic cohesive devices such as 'First of all', 'In addition', and 'Moreover' to connect your ideas. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes mechanical, and the referencing is occasionally unclear. For example, in the second paragraph, the transition from reporting the loss to mentioning a duplicate copy is abrupt and confusing for the reader. The paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter, but the progression of ideas needs to be smoother to achieve a higher band score. Ensure that each sentence logically follows the previous one to improve the overall coherence.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for this task, such as 'inform', 'importance', 'documents', and 'confirmation'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation. For example, 'do follow up check' is unnatural; a more standard phrasing would be 'conduct a follow-up check'. Additionally, 'duplication copy' is redundant; 'duplicate' or 'copy' would suffice. You attempt to use formal language, but some phrases feel slightly awkward or non-native. Expanding your range of collocations and focusing on more precise word choices will help you convey your message more effectively and naturally.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors that persist. For example, 'I am writing to inform about' is missing an object (e.g., 'inform you about'), and 'the time I left from office' is grammatically incorrect; 'when I left the office' would be better. There are also minor issues with articles, such as 'on Hotel office desk' (should be 'on the hotel office desk'). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles.
