Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
My name is Adam Gilbert. I was a guest at your prestigious hotel from 10th March 2026 to 15th March 2026 and I was staying in the room number 216. I really enjoyed my stay at the hotel and the service was world-class.
The reason that I am writing this letter is that I forgot some important documents in my room. I specifically remember putting them in the locker of the room. They are confidential business documents and they are really important for me, as I have an upcoming meeting, where I need to present those documents.
I request you to kindly send those documents to my home address which is A-232, ABC Street, New Delhi - [redacted phone], India. Those are confidential documents, so I would really appreciate if you can send them to me in a sealed envelope on an urgent basis.
Yours sincerely,
Adam Gilbert

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly state where the papers were left (the locker in room 216), explain their importance (confidential business documents needed for an upcoming meeting), and provide a clear request for action (sending them to your home address). The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a hotel manager. The ideas are well-developed and the purpose of the letter is clear from the outset. You have fulfilled all requirements of the task effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph serves a distinct purpose, moving from the introduction to the problem, and finally to the requested solution. Cohesive devices such as 'The reason that I am writing this letter is' and 'I would really appreciate if' are used effectively to connect sentences. The paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter, and the overall structure is easy to follow. The flow of information is natural and professional throughout the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for a formal business context. Phrases like 'prestigious hotel', 'world-class', and 'confidential business documents' are used accurately. While the vocabulary is sufficient and conveys your meaning clearly, it remains somewhat standard. To reach a higher band, you could incorporate more sophisticated collocations or nuanced expressions. However, there are no errors in word choice or spelling that impede communication, and the language used is consistently appropriate for the task.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
The letter displays a good command of grammatical structures. You use a mix of simple and complex sentences effectively, such as 'I really enjoyed my stay at the hotel and the service was world-class' and 'I would really appreciate if you can send them to me in a sealed envelope'. There are very few errors, and the punctuation is generally accurate. The sentence construction is clear and error-free for the most part, which allows for smooth reading. The control over tense and modal verbs is consistent with the requirements of the task.
