Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Manager,
I am writing to inquire about my papers that I accidentally left in your hotel during my last visit on 20th August in the evening conference.
We booked your Southdale hall in Scarborough location. where we organized our conference with our foreign investors. The hall number was DS1604. During my visit I was sitting on the corner behind the horse painting. I vividly remember that my paper was with me. While seeing off our guest, I was in a rush because of an urgent call and had left the hall without collecting my papers.
Furthermore, they are essential documents which contain information about my presentation and facts about our new launch . I have to give my presentation next week for submission.
I would really appreciate it if you follow up with your coordinators and staff about if they found any papers on that day after we had finished. If you find any clue do not hesitate to contact me.
Looking forward to hearing from you.
Yours faithfully
Tinka

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly identified the location of the papers (Southdale hall, DS1604, behind the horse painting), explained their importance (presentation and new launch facts), and stated what you want the manager to do (follow up with staff). The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a hotel manager. The ideas are well-developed and the purpose of the letter is clear from the beginning. You have fulfilled the requirements of the task effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph serves a specific purpose, moving from the context of the visit to the specific location of the items, their importance, and finally the request for action. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore' and 'If you find any clue', which help the flow. However, the transition between the second and third paragraphs could be slightly smoother to improve the overall cohesion. Overall, the structure is logical and easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Phrases like 'foreign investors', 'vividly remember', and 'essential documents' are used appropriately. There are some minor issues with collocation and word choice, such as 'seeing off our guest' (which is slightly informal) and 'my paper was with me' (where 'papers' would be more accurate given the context). Despite these minor slips, the vocabulary is adequate for the task and does not impede communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as the sentence fragment 'where we organized our conference...' and the punctuation error 'location. where'. Additionally, 'had left the hall' should be 'left the hall' to maintain consistent tense. While these errors are noticeable, they do not prevent the reader from understanding your request. To reach a higher band, focus on ensuring that your complex sentences are punctuated correctly and that your verb tenses remain consistent throughout the narrative.
