Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
My name is Adam Gilbert. I was a guest at your prestigious hotel from 20th March 2026 to 26th March 2026. I was staying in room 202. The reason that I am writing this letter is that I forgot some important documents at your hotel. I think either I left those in the safe or at the desk of the room.
The documents were from the conference that I attended at the hotel. I need those papers urgently as I need to give a presentation using those documents. I cannot emphasise enough on the urgency and importance of the papers.
I request you to send those documents via mail as soon as possible. The documents are confidential, so I request you to send them over in a sealed envelope. In case you are not able to find the documents, please feel free to give me a call on my mobile number given below.
Yours faithfully,
Adam Gilbert

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly identify the likely location of the documents (the safe or the desk), explain their importance regarding your upcoming presentation, and provide a clear request for the manager to mail them. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a hotel manager. The ideas are well-developed and the purpose of the communication is clear from the outset. You have fulfilled all requirements of the task effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter is logically organized, with a clear introduction, body paragraphs addressing specific points, and a formal closing. Each paragraph focuses on a single aspect of the task, which aids readability. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'The reason that', 'In case', and 'The documents are' to link ideas. While the flow is logical, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat functional rather than sophisticated. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow throughout the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly and professionally. Phrases like 'prestigious hotel', 'urgently', and 'confidential' are well-chosen and appropriate for the context. There are no significant errors in word choice or collocation that impede communication. While the vocabulary is functional and accurate, it lacks a wider range of less common lexical items that would elevate the response to a higher band. Overall, the language is precise enough to meet the requirements of the task effectively.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
The letter displays a good level of grammatical control. You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'The reason that I am writing this letter is that...' and 'In case you are not able to find the documents, please feel free to...'. There are very few errors, and those present do not hinder understanding. Punctuation is generally accurate, and the sentence construction is sound. To reach a higher band, you could incorporate a greater variety of complex grammatical structures, such as passive voice or conditional clauses, with more consistent accuracy.
