IELTS Writing Task 1 question
Write a letter to the manager of the hotel. In your letter

- tell the manager what you want him/her to do
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir,
I hope this letter meets you well. I am writing to kindly inform you about the misplacement of my research papers which was used to deliver as speech at the Crystal Conference Hall. I had sat at the second roll adjacent to the loud speakers by the right. It is a forty paged hardcover booklet in black colour.
It is of great importance that I get back this booklet because it contains vital information needed to publish my thesis. Unfortunately, that is the only available copy as the typist had discarded the manuscript.
If you would kindly oblige me to check through the CCTV footage(of course with your staff), in order to trace back where I had left it off; that would be amazing.
I look forward to hearing from you soonest so that I would know the next step to take because I am running behind schedule for the final defense of my Dissertation.
Kind regards,
Florence Chinonyerem Udeh

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly identified the location of the papers, explained their significance regarding your thesis, and provided a clear request for the manager to check CCTV footage. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter, and the purpose is clear from the outset. The response is well-focused and maintains a consistent perspective throughout. To reach a higher band, you could provide slightly more detail regarding the specific time or session you attended to help the manager locate the items more efficiently.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized, with each paragraph focusing on a distinct part of the task. The progression of ideas is clear, moving from the identification of the problem to the justification and finally the proposed solution. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'Unfortunately' and 'If you would kindly', which help the flow. However, the transition between the description of the booklet and the importance of the papers could be smoother. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the overall structure is easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to communicate your message clearly. Phrases like 'misplacement of my research papers' and 'running behind schedule' are used effectively. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'second roll' (should be 'row') and 'forty paged' (should be 'forty-page'). While the vocabulary is functional and appropriate for the task, it lacks the more sophisticated or precise collocations that would characterize a higher band score. However, the meaning is never obscured by these minor inaccuracies.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as the conditional sentence in the third paragraph. There are a few grammatical slips, such as 'which was used to deliver as speech' (should be 'which I used to deliver a speech') and 'soonest' (which is slightly informal in this context). Punctuation is generally handled well, though the use of parentheses in the third paragraph is a bit informal for a formal letter. Despite these errors, the grammar does not impede communication, and the majority of your sentences are clear.
