Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter to request you for your assistance to find my documents at your hotel.
During my stay last weekend, I booked your hotel (room no. 105) because I had to go for my interview next morning. I remember, I placed my file in drawer in the study desk. When I supposed to check out I may have forgotten to take out my papers.
This file is really important for me because it contain my original education credentials. It is very difficult for me to request for new documents and it takes too long process.
I would really appreciate if you could ask to support staff to check my documents. If you find it please call me at [redacted phone] or email me at [redacted email]. Thank you for your time and support.
Looking forward for your response.
Yours faithfully,
Rita

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly identified the location of the papers (room 105, study desk), explained their importance (original education credentials), and provided a clear request for action (asking staff to check and providing contact details). The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a hotel manager. To improve, you could provide slightly more detail regarding the appearance of the file to help the staff locate it more efficiently, which would further develop your ideas and ensure the task is fully satisfied.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task, which helps the reader follow your message easily. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'During my stay' and 'If you find it' to link ideas. However, the transition between sentences could be smoother; for example, the jump between describing the file and explaining the difficulty of replacing it is a bit abrupt. Using more varied linking words would help improve the flow and move you into a higher band.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You have used an adequate range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Phrases like 'original education credentials' and 'request for your assistance' are appropriate for the formal context. There are some minor word-choice issues, such as 'request you for your assistance' (which should be 'request your assistance') and 'takes too long process' (which should be 'is a time-consuming process'). While the vocabulary is sufficient for the task, incorporating more precise collocations would demonstrate a stronger command of the language.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'When I supposed to check out' (should be 'When I was supposed to check out') and 'it contain' (should be 'it contains'). Additionally, 'ask to support staff' should be 'ask the support staff'. While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede the overall meaning of your letter. To achieve a higher score, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of passive voice and auxiliary verbs in complex sentences.
