Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to ask your help in finding my bachelor degree's transcripts that I left at your hotel while checking out.

My certificates were in a black folders that was in my hands when I was completing the formalities of checking out. When I was securing my IDs in my wallet after your cashier had checked, I placed the folder on the receptionist desk and forgot to pick, and left the hotel in a cab.

I realized about my transcript when I was asked to present them at a job interview. I explained the incident to the interviewer who gave me a week timeline to submit the copies of transcripts to secure the job.

I would appreciate it if you could check with your cashier if they found it. Please let me know if they found it and keep it secure with you, I will come and collect from you tomorrow at your early convenience.

I look forward for your prompt response.

Yours truly,

Parvinderjeet

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly identified where the papers were left (the receptionist desk), explained their importance (needed for a job interview), and provided a clear request for action (checking with the cashier and holding them securely). The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a hotel manager. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, ensuring the reader understands the urgency of the situation. You have fulfilled all requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph serves a distinct purpose, moving from the introduction of the problem to the specific details and finally the requested action. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'When I was...' and 'I would appreciate it if...' to link your sentences. While the flow is generally smooth, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat functional rather than sophisticated. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different stages of your request, which helps the reader follow your narrative easily.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'formalities', 'incident', and 'prompt response'. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'bachelor degree's transcripts' (should be 'bachelor's degree transcripts') and 'forgot to pick' (should be 'forgot to pick them up'). Despite these minor inaccuracies, the meaning is always clear, and the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your message professionally. You show an ability to use formal language suitable for a business context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'black folders that was' (should be 'black folder that was') and 'I realized about my transcript' (should be 'I realized my transcript was missing'). Additionally, 'I look forward for your prompt response' should be 'I look forward to your prompt response'. While these errors are present, they do not impede communication. The majority of your sentences are clear, and you maintain a consistent formal tone throughout the letter.
