Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to you regarding the important documents I left in your hotel’s room. I stayed in your hotel for 5 days, from 23 April to 28 April for official work. My booking id was 0123. The room number I stayed in was 09. I checked out from your hotel yesterday at 10:30 AM. On my way back to home I realized that I left those documents in the room I booked.
As I have mentioned earlier that I was there for my work trip. We are working on an important project for our company and the documentation I forgot in the room has very crucial and private information.
I will really appreciate if you can send the paperwork in parcel and I will pay the fees for the courier. I would have personally come in to receive the papers but the hotel is 300 kilometers away from my place.
I shall be really thankful to you.
Yours Sincerely,
Jasmine Rana

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly identified the location of the papers (room 09), explained their importance (crucial project information), and provided a clear request for the manager to courier them. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a hotel manager. The ideas are well-developed and the purpose of the communication is clear from the outset. You have provided sufficient detail, such as your booking ID and dates of stay, which adds to the realism and effectiveness of the task completion.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph serves a distinct purpose, moving from the introduction and context to the explanation of the problem and finally the request for action. Cohesive devices such as 'As I have mentioned earlier' and 'On my way back' are used effectively to link sentences. The paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter, and the flow of information is smooth throughout the text, making it easy for the reader to follow your request.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary suitable for a formal business-related letter. Phrases like 'official work', 'crucial and private information', and 'personally come in to receive' are used accurately. While the vocabulary is functional and clear, there is room to incorporate more sophisticated or precise collocations to reach a higher band. For example, instead of 'send the paperwork in parcel', more natural phrasing would be 'arrange for the documents to be couriered'. Overall, the language is precise enough to convey your meaning without any ambiguity.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
The letter displays a good control of grammar with a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are error-free, and the punctuation is generally accurate. There are minor slips, such as 'On my way back to home' (should be 'on my way home') and 'I will really appreciate if' (should be 'I would really appreciate it if'). However, these errors are infrequent and do not impede communication. The use of modal verbs like 'would' and 'shall' is appropriate for the formal tone required in this task.
