Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir,

I am writing about some important document that I believe left in your hotel during my recent stay.

i stayed in Room 345 at your hotel from August 28th to 30th. I think I left my file on a small desk near the window. I was in hurry while leaving and may have forgotten it there.

The file is extremely important because it contains my passport, work permit and my job contract parers. Next week I am going to the America to start my new job. So, these all document are essential for me at the moment.

I would be greatly thankful to your whole team if you could ask your housekeeping staff to check the room immediately. If you find it, could you keep it safely and let me know? I can collect it today itself or you can courier it to me at my expenses.

I look forward to hear form you soon.

Yours Faithfully,

J S

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The response covers all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly identified the location of the papers (Room 345, desk near the window), explained their importance (passport, work permit, job contract for travel), and provided clear instructions to the manager regarding retrieval. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter. The ideas are well-developed and the purpose of the letter is immediately clear to the reader. You have successfully fulfilled all requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph serves a distinct purpose, moving from the situation to the explanation and finally the request. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'because', 'so', and 'if' to link ideas effectively. While the transition between sentences is generally smooth, the use of more sophisticated cohesive devices could further improve the flow. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different stages of your request, making the letter easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task. You use specific terms like 'housekeeping staff', 'courier', and 'job contract' correctly. However, there are some minor errors in word form and collocation, such as 'job contract parers' (likely a typo for papers) and 'I look forward to hear form you' (should be 'hearing from'). These errors do not impede communication, but they prevent the vocabulary from reaching a higher band. Using more varied synonyms for 'important' or 'left' would enhance the lexical quality.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'I believe left' (missing 'I'), 'I was in hurry' (missing 'a'), and 'these all document' (should be 'these documents'). Additionally, there is a minor error in the closing: 'Yours Faithfully' should be 'Yours faithfully' (lowercase 'f'). Despite these errors, the meaning remains clear throughout the letter. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and article usage, as these are the most frequent sources of your grammatical slips.
