Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Ma’am/Sir,

I hope you are doing well upon receiving my letter.

I am writing to you regarding an item I left in your hotel yesterday, it is a brown envelope with important papers inside it.

I stayed in the hotel for 1 day and check out yesterday around 12 o’clock in the afternoon. I remember that I left my papers at the table which is beside the television. I was on rush yesterday due to some meetings that I need to attend on time. The papers are beneficial to me because this are my reports for my thesis and need to pass for my finals this coming Friday.

Kindly please confirm with me if you find it and keep it in a safe place so I can pass by and collect it by tomorrow or after tomorrow in your convenient time. Please don’t hesitate to call me or message me if there is prefer time for collection.

Thank you and hope to hear from you the soonest.

Faithfully yours,

Jessica

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly identified the location of the papers (the table beside the television), explained their significance (thesis reports for finals), and provided a clear request for the manager to secure them for collection. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a hotel manager. To reach a higher band, ensure that the explanation of why the papers are important is slightly more detailed to fully develop the ideas, as the current explanation is quite brief.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter follows a logical progression, moving from the purpose of the letter to the details of the lost item and finally the call to action. Paragraphing is used, though the structure could be improved by separating the request for action into its own distinct paragraph. Cohesive devices are present (e.g., 'because', 'so'), but the flow is occasionally slightly mechanical. Using a wider variety of linking words or transition phrases would help the ideas connect more fluidly throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary to communicate your message clearly. Phrases like 'in your convenient time' and 'don’t hesitate to call me' are appropriate for this context. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'need to pass for my finals' (should be 'need to submit for my finals') and 'at the table' (should be 'on the table'). Expanding your vocabulary to include more precise collocations would improve this score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The letter contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'this are my reports' (should be 'these are my reports'), 'I was on rush' (should be 'I was in a rush'), and 'if there is prefer time' (should be 'if there is a preferred time'). These errors do not impede communication, but they indicate a need for more careful proofreading regarding subject-verb agreement and preposition usage.
