Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I hope this letter finds you well. My name is Sam Mistry and I am writing this regarding the employment letter which I left on my desk.

As you know, my health card is expiring next week and I completely forgot about the renewal. However, a few days ago, I discovered about it and requested HR for the latest employment letter in order to renew my health card. Furthermore, today I had excessive work and I left my letter on my desk.

My employment letter is very important because not only is this the only document required for the renewal but also it took one week to create it. Without it, I will not be able to process my application.

Therefore, I am requesting to you to take those letters from my desk and you can either put it in the main office or give it to my colleague. I will grab it tomorrow as soon as possible from him.

Once again, thank you so much for helping.

Yours faithfully,

Sam Mistry

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly identified the location of the papers (the desk), explained their importance (renewal of health card and time-consuming to produce), and provided a clear request for action (placing them in the office or giving them to a colleague). The tone is appropriate for a formal letter. To reach a higher band, ensure that the explanation of the situation is slightly more concise to allow for more focus on the request, as the background information regarding the health card renewal is somewhat repetitive.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. You have used some cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore', 'Therefore', and 'Once again' to link your ideas. However, the progression between the second and third paragraphs could be smoother. The referencing is generally clear, though the transition from explaining the importance of the document to the request for action feels slightly abrupt. Overall, the paragraphing is appropriate and the message is easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Phrases like 'employment letter', 'process my application', and 'expiring next week' are accurate and relevant to the context. There are no significant errors in word choice that impede communication. To improve, you could incorporate more sophisticated collocations or less common vocabulary to demonstrate a wider range, such as using 'urgent' instead of 'very important' or 'retrieve' instead of 'grab'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a good control of grammar with a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most of your sentences are error-free, and your punctuation is generally correct. There are minor slips, such as 'requested HR for' (should be 'requested that HR provide' or 'asked HR for') and 'I am requesting to you to take' (should be 'I am requesting that you take'). These errors do not impede communication, but they slightly affect the overall fluency and precision of your writing.
