Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am Awalnoor Sethi. Recently, I checked out at your hotel around noon and I think I had left my important folder in the room 201 on the side table.

The folder is of A3 size in black color with my name written on it. It contains property papers on my name which I require to sign my upcoming deal. I request you to immediately search for the binder in my room or ask room service employees if they found any such file. I would be thankful to you. Please keep me updated and notify me as soon as possible on my contact information in your records.

Once, the folder is recovered please mail it to the address mentioned in your bill book along with the courier receipt. I will transfer you the courier fee in your account. I would be thankful to you for your all help and support.

Yours

Awalnoor Sethi

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly identified the location of the papers (room 201, side table), explained their importance (property papers for an upcoming deal), and provided a clear request for action (search the room and mail them). The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a hotel manager. The ideas are well-developed and the purpose of the letter is immediately clear to the reader. To reach a higher band, you could expand slightly on the urgency of the situation to further justify the request for immediate action.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter follows a logical progression, moving from the identification of the problem to the specific details and finally the requested solution. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the introduction, the description of the items, and the call to action. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Once, the folder is recovered' and 'in addition', though the flow could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words to connect sentences more fluidly. Overall, the message is easy to follow and the structure is appropriate for a formal request.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Phrases like 'checked out', 'property papers', and 'notify me' are accurate and appropriate for the context. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in collocation and word choice, such as 'in my name' (should be 'in my name' or 'belonging to me') and 'bill book' (which is not standard terminology; 'invoice' or 'registration details' would be better). Expanding your range of formal business vocabulary would help elevate the score further.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are some grammatical slips, such as 'I think I had left' (should be 'I think I left') and 'I will transfer you the courier fee in your account' (should be 'to your account'). Punctuation is generally handled well, though there is an unnecessary comma in 'Once, the folder is recovered'. The majority of your sentences are error-free, and the errors present do not impede communication, which is a key indicator for this band level.
