Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing this letter to ask for assistance in locating some important papers that I believe I accidentally left at your hotel.
I stayed there on the 2nd of August for two days with my colleague. We booked the big room in your hotel so we could do meeting. Apart from this, I brought my important documents with me, as I needed them there. I believe that I forgot them in the cupboard in my room, which is in the top corner, so I did not lose them.
Moreover, those papers are extremely important because they contain valuable information related to my business meeting. I need those papers for my upcoming presentation with the CEO of my company.
I would be grateful if you could send someone from your staff to try to find the documents. If the folder has been found, please contact me as soon as possible and send it by mail or leave it with the receptionist and I will pick it up later.
Thank you for your assistance. I look forward to hearing from you soon.
Yours faithfully,
S.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly identify where the papers were left (the cupboard in the room), explain their importance (for a business meeting with the CEO), and provide clear instructions to the manager regarding their retrieval. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a hotel manager. The ideas are well-developed and the purpose of the letter is clear from the beginning. You have fully satisfied the requirements of the task.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task, which makes the letter easy to follow. You use cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Apart from this', and 'If the folder has been found' to link your ideas effectively. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the transition between the explanation of the problem and the request for action is smooth. The overall structure is coherent and professional.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task. Phrases like 'assistance in locating', 'accidentally left', and 'valuable information' are used correctly. However, there are some minor limitations in word choice, such as 'do meeting' (should be 'hold a meeting' or 'conduct a meeting') and 'big room' (which is slightly simplistic). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your message clearly, incorporating more precise collocations would elevate the response to a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Most of your sentences are error-free, and the grammar is generally accurate. There are a few minor issues, such as 'so I did not lose them' which is slightly awkward in context, and the phrasing 'do meeting' is grammatically incorrect. However, these errors do not impede communication. Your use of punctuation and formal letter conventions is correct, and the overall control of grammar is strong enough to support clear communication throughout the letter.
