Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir/Madam,
I am writing to you to inquire about the papers that I forgot at your restaurant.
To provide more details, I visited your hotel 2 days before. I was sitting around the corner near the entrance, and having a breakfast. I think I left my papers on the table.
These papers are really so important to me. I have designed my project that I need to submit it to my manager tomorrow. My whole life career will ruined if i have not submit this to him. So could you please ask your employees if they have observed any papers from the table.
I would appreciate it if you could send me the papers via courier. Or I can collect them personally from you whenever you are free.
I look forward to hearing from you soon. Please let me know if you need any further information from me.
Yours faithfully,
Ganesh.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The letter covers all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly state where the papers were left (the restaurant/table), explain their importance (project submission), and provide a clear request for action (checking with staff and courier/collection). The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. The ideas are relevant and sufficiently developed to meet the requirements of the task. To reach a higher band, ensure that the opening and closing are consistently formal; while 'Dear Sir/Madam' is correct, ensure the body paragraphs maintain a professional flow throughout.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is logically organized, with each paragraph addressing a specific part of the prompt. There is a clear progression of ideas from the initial inquiry to the explanation and finally the request. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'To provide more details' and 'So could you please' to link your thoughts. However, the paragraphing is slightly disjointed, and the transition between the explanation of the papers' importance and the request for action could be smoother. Using a wider variety of linking words would improve the overall flow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You have an adequate range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Phrases like 'inquire about' and 'appreciate it if' are appropriate for a formal context. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'having a breakfast' (should be 'having breakfast') and 'whole life career will ruined' (should be 'career will be ruined'). These errors do not impede communication, but they limit the score. To improve, focus on more precise collocations and ensure that your verb forms are used correctly in complex sentences.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'I visited your hotel 2 days before' (should be 'two days ago'), 'if i have not submit' (should be 'if I have not submitted'), and 'observed any papers from the table' (should be 'noticed any papers on the table'). These errors are frequent enough to be noticeable but do not prevent the reader from understanding your request. Increasing your control over verb tenses and prepositions will help improve your accuracy.
