Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing this letter to request information regarding my missing document papers.
My name is Khushi Patel. I was at your hotel last night in the room no. 207. I did check out this early morning. However, when I opened my bag I realized that I have missed my important document papers at the hotel. Although I am not sure where I have left my papers, but I am assuming it may be placed besides of the bed. In fact, there were two drawers besides of the bed. Thus I though it may be placed in one of them.
Furthermore, papers are related to my office work. Additionally, I am ask to submit it until the next Monday. Hence, it is really necessary to have that papers before the due day.
I request you to tell any of your staff members to check that room and collect the documents. It would be a favor if you courier that papers on my address. I will pay the courier charge on your behalf.
It would be a great help if you make it happen.
Yours faithfully,
Khushi Patel

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The letter covers all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly state where you think the papers were left (beside the bed in room 207), explain their importance (related to office work with a Monday deadline), and provide a clear request for action (check the room and courier the documents). The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a hotel manager. To improve, ensure you provide slightly more detail to fully develop your ideas, as some explanations are quite brief. Overall, the task is fulfilled effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body, and conclusion. You use some cohesive devices such as 'However', 'Furthermore', and 'Thus' to link ideas. However, the use of these devices is sometimes slightly mechanical or repetitive. The paragraphing is generally appropriate, though the body paragraphs could be better balanced to improve the flow of information. Referencing is clear, and the reader can easily follow your narrative from the initial problem to the requested solution.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You have an adequate range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'missing document papers' (redundant) and 'besides of the bed' (incorrect preposition usage). You attempt to use formal language, which is appropriate for the task, but the vocabulary remains somewhat basic. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more precise collocations and avoid repeating the same words, such as 'papers' and 'placed', throughout the text.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, particularly with prepositions ('besides of the bed') and verb forms ('I am ask to submit'). Additionally, there are minor issues with article usage and pluralization, such as 'that papers' instead of 'those papers'. While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede communication, and the meaning remains clear throughout the letter. Increasing your control over complex sentence structures and proofreading for subject-verb agreement will help improve your score.
