Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear sir

I am writing this letter in reference to the documents that are left behind at your hotel.

I visited your hotel on last Saturday around 12pm noon for the lunch. I was seated at the right corner of the enterance. I visited your hotel with my friend who got very impressed with the food and the ambiance of your hotel.we finished our lunch and paid the bill and left in hurry. After i returned to the home i realized that i had left the file t your hotel. The file contains the crucial documents of my university.

The papers are my degree certificate and are need to be submitted to my workplace before deadline. Those are very important for me as they need to be verified by the company before joining.

I would be greatful if you to tell your staff to look for it at the enterance or at the billing counter. If the papers are found, i want you to put it at safe place and call me on my number i will come and collect it.

Looking forward to your reply.

Thanks

Regards

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The letter covers all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly state where the papers were left (the right corner of the entrance), explain their importance (university degree certificates needed for work verification), and provide a clear request for action (checking the area and calling you). The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter, although the opening 'Dear sir' is slightly informal compared to the requested 'Dear Sir or Madam'. The ideas are relevant and sufficiently developed to meet the requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your narrative. You use some basic cohesive devices like 'After I returned' and 'If the papers are found'. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes a bit mechanical, and there are minor issues with paragraphing consistency. For example, the second paragraph is quite long and could have been split to better separate the description of the visit from the explanation of the documents. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You have an adequate range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. You use some topic-specific terms like 'ambiance', 'crucial documents', and 'verified'. However, there are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'got very impressed' (should be 'was very impressed') and 'put it at safe place' (should be 'keep it in a safe place'). While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the vocabulary from reaching a higher band level. Expanding your range of collocations would improve your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors throughout the text, such as 'documents that are left behind' (should be 'were left behind'), 'on last Saturday' (remove 'on'), and 'I would be greatful if you to tell' (should be 'if you could tell'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with spacing after periods and the capitalization of 'i'. While these errors are noticeable, they do not prevent the reader from understanding your request, which is the primary goal of this task.
