Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to request about papers that I believe I left accidently in my hotel room, during my stay last week.
I stayed in Room 203 from 12/10 to 14/10 and I believe that i left the papers in the drawer. Specifically, it might be in first compartment of working table.
The papers I left have great importance because they are my work related documents which i have to submit by the end of the week. It includes couple of files in brown leather bag with chrome handle. Losing them would cause considerable inconvenience at my work.
I would be grateful if you can ask your member of your staff to check the drawer or lost & found department. If the papers are found, I would appreciate if you contact me and arrange to send it to me.
I look forward to hear it from you at your earliest convenience.
Yours faithfully,
Ironman

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly identify the location of the papers (Room 203, in the desk drawer), explain their importance (work-related documents with a deadline), and provide a clear request for action (check the room/lost and found and arrange for return). The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a hotel manager. The ideas are well-developed and the purpose of the correspondence is clear from the outset. You have met all the requirements of the task effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph serves a distinct purpose, moving from the reason for writing to the specific details, the importance of the items, and finally the call to action. You use appropriate paragraphing and basic cohesive devices such as 'Specifically' and 'If the papers are found'. While the flow is generally smooth, the transition between the description of the bag and the request for action could be slightly more refined to improve the overall cohesion.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task. Phrases like 'considerable inconvenience' and 'earliest convenience' are used correctly and fit the formal register. However, there are some minor inaccuracies, such as 'request about papers' (should be 'inquire about') and 'it might be in first compartment' (missing article 'the'). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the variety and precision required for a higher band score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'I left accidently' (adverb placement), 'i left' (capitalization), 'It includes couple of files' (missing article 'a'), and 'I look forward to hear it from you' (should be 'hearing'). Despite these errors, the meaning remains clear throughout the letter. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement, consistent capitalization of the pronoun 'I', and ensuring that gerunds follow phrases like 'look forward to'.
