Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I hope this letter finds you well.
I had stayed at your hotel on 7 September 2026 in room no.202. I am writing regarding an important document that I might have left in the room.
The document is an offer letter from TBMPL and has a blue and green colour desgin on it. The last I can remember is keeping it in the drawer below the television. It is an original offer letter that I had received and I am expected to sign and share it with the company by this Saturday i.e 12 September 2026.
However, since I had visited Vadodara only for the interview it won't be feasible for me to visit the hotel personally for checking and getting the letter. It's a humble request if you can inquire with the cleaning staff and check the room for the letter yourself. If you find the letter kindly courier it to me on the return address of this letter.
I look forward to a positive reply.
Thanking you in advance.
Yours Faithfully,
Urvi Uttekar

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly identified the location of the papers (the drawer below the television), explained their importance (an original offer letter required for a deadline), and provided a clear request for action (inquire with staff and courier the document). The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a hotel manager. The ideas are well-developed and the purpose of the letter is immediately clear to the reader. You have fully satisfied the requirements of the task.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a formal closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the request, which helps the reader follow your narrative easily. You use appropriate cohesive devices such as 'However' and 'If you find' to link your ideas. The paragraphing is logical and contributes to the overall flow of the letter. The transition between explaining the situation and making the request is smooth and professional.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary suitable for a formal business-style letter. Phrases like 'not feasible', 'humble request', and 'inquire with' are used accurately and appropriately. There are no significant spelling errors, and the word choices are precise enough to convey your meaning clearly. While the vocabulary is functional and accurate, incorporating a few more sophisticated collocations could elevate the response further, but the current range is sufficient for a high band score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
The grammar is generally accurate, with a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. You successfully use conditional sentences ('If you find the letter...') and relative clauses. There are minor slips, such as 'colour desgin' (spelling) and 'on the return address' (preposition choice: 'to the return address' or 'using the return address' would be more natural). However, these errors are rare and do not impede communication. The majority of your sentences are error-free, showing good control over punctuation and syntax.
