Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing with regard to the important papers that I left in your hotel, while I was checking them before going to the meeting. I remember the papers were kept on the side table of my bed.

The papers are really important to me as it has all the information for my upcoming projet, and that has to be discussed in a meeting. If the papers get lost that will be huge loss to me and my teammates who have been working on it since past six months. My coworkers had faith in me that's why they left this important information with me. Also, it would be difficult to restore the information since it contains a lot of research work and some other confidential data.

I would like to request you to ask your staff and housekeeping to check the room carefully and i would really appreciate if you can send by them mail i will send you the postal charges. I am looking forward to your response.

Yours faithfully

Ana

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly identified the location of the papers (side table), explained their importance (upcoming project, confidential research), and provided a clear request for action (check the room and mail them). The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a hotel manager. The ideas are well-developed and relevant, ensuring the reader understands the urgency of the situation. To reach a higher band, ensure that the explanation of the importance of the papers is slightly more concise to allow for a more sophisticated closing statement.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body, and conclusion. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task. You use some cohesive devices such as 'also' and 'as', which help the flow of ideas. However, the transition between the second and third paragraphs could be smoother. The use of paragraphing is appropriate, and the overall progression of information is easy to follow. To improve, try using a wider variety of linking words or phrases to connect your sentences more fluidly, such as 'consequently' or 'furthermore'.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'confidential data' and 'upcoming project' effectively. There are some minor word choice issues, such as 'restore the information' (where 'retrieve' or 'reconstruct' might be more precise) and 'huge loss' (which could be 'significant loss'). The vocabulary is sufficient to communicate your message clearly, but it lacks the more sophisticated, less common lexical items that would characterize a higher band score. Focus on using more precise collocations to enhance your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are some grammatical slips, such as 'since past six months' (should be 'for the past six months') and 'send by them mail' (which is awkward phrasing). Punctuation is generally correct, though there is a missing capital 'I' in the final paragraph. The majority of your sentences are error-free, but the occasional slips prevent a higher score. Focus on subject-verb agreement and preposition usage to improve accuracy.
