Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear Sir,
I am writing to inquire about my important business documents, I left in your hotel during my stay last week.
My name is Kamal. I am a Property Manager in Chandigarh. I stayed in your hotel “Maharaja” on 5th September during a business trip. During the checkout from the hotel, I forgot some confidential business documents on the cupboard by Television in room 205.
Since the documents include some balance sheets, property valuation of my next project, they are very important to me. I have to close the deal by 15 September, so I need them urgently.
I sincerely request you to please get the room checked for the documents. I really appreciate if you could mail it to me on attached address on urgent basis. You can send me a receipt of courier charges and your banking details so I could pay you the charges incurred.
I would truly appreciate your help.
Yours faithfully,
Kamal

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly identified the location of the papers (room 205, on the cupboard), explained their importance (confidential balance sheets and property valuation for a deal), and provided a clear request for action (checking the room and mailing the documents). The tone is appropriate for a formal business letter, and the purpose is clear from the outset. The response is well-focused and covers all requirements of the task effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph serves a distinct purpose, moving from the reason for writing to the specific details and finally the call to action. Cohesive devices such as 'Since', 'so', and 'I would truly appreciate' are used effectively to link ideas. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the introduction, body, and conclusion. The flow is smooth, and the reader can easily follow the narrative without confusion.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Terms like 'confidential', 'valuation', and 'incurred' are used correctly and appropriately for the context. While the vocabulary is functional and accurate, it is generally standard. To reach a higher band, you could incorporate more sophisticated collocations or nuanced phrasing, such as 'misplaced' instead of 'forgot' or 'urgent assistance' instead of 'urgent basis'. Overall, the lexical control is solid and supports the task well.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
The letter contains a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are error-free, and the meaning is always clear. There is a minor punctuation error in the first sentence where a comma is used instead of a relative pronoun (e.g., 'documents, I left' should be 'documents that I left'). Additionally, 'on attached address' requires an article ('the attached address'). Despite these minor slips, your control over grammar is strong, and the errors do not impede communication at all.
